Florida Memorial University is a private coeducational four-year college in Miami Gardens, Florida. One of the 39 part establishments of the United Negro College Fund, and a verifiably Black, Baptist-related foundation which is positioned second in Florida and ninth in the United States for graduating African-American educators.

History

One of the most seasoned scholastic focuses in Florida, the college was established in 1879 as the Florida Baptist Institute in Live Oak, Florida. Before long, the American Baptist Home Mission Society gave its full backing and the first customary school year started in 1880. 

In 1882, the Florida Baptist Academy was set up in Jacksonville, Florida. The name was later changed to Florida Normal and Industrial Institute. It arrived that two siblings, James Weldon Johnson and J. Rosamond Johnson (employee), composed the words and music to "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing" (known as the "Negro National Anthem"), in 1900. 

Florida Normal and Industrial Institute moved to St. Augustine in 1918 on a portion of a 110-section of land (0.45 km2) tract of area known as "Old Homes Plantation", earlier one of the biggest slave ranches in Florida. In 1941, the Live Oak and St. Augustine foundations blended, changing their constrained offerings from a lesser school arrangement to a four-year human sciences organization which graduated its initial four-year class in 1945. Its name was changed in 1950 to Florida Normal and Industrial Memorial College. In 1963, the contract was again altered to change the name to Florida Memorial College. In 1968, the school moved to its present site in Northwest Miami and by 1972 graduated its top of the line at the Miami site. Florida Memorial College praised its 100th commemoration in 1979 and started a progression of development undertakings on the 44-section of land (180,000 m2) site. 

In 1993 Dr. Albert E. Smith was named as the school's tenth president, proclaiming another time of development in the organization's rich history. In December 2004, the foundation's name was changed to Florida Memorial University with the declaration being made at the Founders' Convocation in March 2005. On July 3, 2006, Dr. Karl S. Wright turned into the eleventh president. In 2006, Florida Memorial College changed its name to Florida Memorial University.
